The American Society of Safety Professionals or ASSP was first established as the American Society of Safety Engineers or ASSE. The organization goes back to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire where the death of 146 garment workers was the cause of inadequate safety measures. It was only recently in June of 2018 that ASSE was renamed as ASSP. It is a worldwide organization that has about 37,000 professional occupational safety and health (OSH) members. These professional members deal with all work-related OSH concerns in all government, industries, and education by doing management, research, supervision, and consultation. For the prevention of workplace fatalities, illnesses, and injuries, members of the organization make use of risk-based methods.
Since its creation, the American Society of Safety Professionals creates initiatives that make the reputation of the OSH profession known. The organization aims to provide OSH professionals continuing education and develop industry standards based on consensus. The organization is presently working hand in hand with the federal agencies namely the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The ASSP also creates accreditation standards when it comes to all degree programs associated with OSH. A professional capability framework is also developed by the ASSP for the benefit of OSH professionals.
There are many benefits when you join the American Society of Safety Professionals. There are many exclusive and discounted opportunities that you can enjoy as an ASSP member to bring value to your safety career and organization.
As a member of the ASSP, you will get plenty of networking and community opportunities. The organization is where OSH professionals from around the globe find a community. Members get advocacy for the profession, networking, and education when they join this community to help them grow as professionals. Through the ASSP’s member communities, the organization helps connect safety professionals coming from different ethnicities, genders, generations, and industries. On a global scale, these members can engage with one another.
Another benefit of the ASSP is their provision of safety training and education to members. Imparting knowledge is one of the objectives of the ASSP. They provide members with learning opportunities at a discounted price. These opportunities come in a range of formats from online courses, webinars, and microlearning to symposiums, conferences, certification exam preparation courses, and certificate programs. Moreover, the ASSP will be the ones to send a certified trainer to your workplace directly. To satisfy organizational goals, you have the liberty to personalize your courses. You enjoy all of these things without worry about the travel costs.
Finally, the ASSP offers publications to its members. With access to OSH publications covering all aspects of safety, ASSP members can read and public their work in these publications. The organization publishes member newsletter, books, and standards. You may get these publications as members of the organization or get them at a discount.
